Let’s talk about GUT baby.. let’s talk about you and me… Let’s talk about all the good things, and the bad things that may be.. let’s talk about GUT…. Let’s talk about GUT! 😊
That got your attention, didn’t it? You’ll never hear that song the same way ever again, sorry! (not sorry!) 😊
Well, this post isn’t about procreation (but it most certainly relates to ALL bodily functions). We’ve all known for some time that a happy gut means a happy life – this is why we say things like: “I have a gut feeling about this!” Or, “You need to trust your gut!”. “I feel it in the pit of my stomach!” “I have a gut-instinct about this!” “I feel a bit unwell, my tummy isn’t “lekka!” “This makes my stomach turn!” “I’ve got butterflies in my stomach!” “This makes my stomach cringe!” “You make me laugh until my stomach hurts!” The latter is not related to gut health per se, but once you have a healthy gut, you’ll definitely laugh a lot more!
Yeah, we’ve all heard them and it’s true! We tend to feel what’s wrong or right within the ‘pit of our stomach’. No wonder our gut-health dictates the quality of our lives – as all disease stems from an unhealthy gut!
This is [the reason] Gut Bar was ‘born’.
A super team of women who make up the Gut Bar, have come together to share their passion for all things relating to healthy guts! Inspired by overcoming their own health challenges, they have also witnessed many lives change as people redirected their path onto a healthier journey. Pulling from their own success-stories, they had a GUT feeling that it would be a wonderful idea to have all their gut-healing products available to YOU at the click of a button!
Yes, YOU! YOU are here reading about all things gut related, because you know your gut needs it! Whether it needs great intervention by re-inoculating, repairing, restoring, or, if it only needs to be maintained – you have found the right place! Soon, you will feel it in your gut too!
So… let’s dive right in and talk about how gut health affects our everyday life! No (good) Guts, No (great) Glory, right? So, you need a few things to keep your gut healthy. Let’s discuss 2 very important ones: *Good bacteria and *Inflammation fighting foods.
We are made up of a lot of bacteria! In fact, we have more bacteria in our body than we have cells! (What?) Yes! Bacteria! And it’s good for you! But we have to make sure we add more good bacteria into our diet, so we are able to fight the bad bacteria that makes us sick.
Our Gut Microbiome is the home where all the magic happens. This is where good gut bacteria help digest our food and turn nutrients into things our body can use for nourishment and growth. The bacteria in our gut stop growing when they don’t have food, so you’ll never have more than you need. But our microbiome is a very sophisticated machine, and we need to ensure we feed it what it needs – otherwise it may get angry and give us a bad gut feeling (this is when the bad bacteria have an opportunity to multiply, should we not have sufficient good bacteria to keep them in check!) The aim is to keep the equilibrium of our good gut bacteria flourishing for optimal health!
When we don’t have a healthy equilibrium of healthy gut bacteria – disease my ensue. Chron’s Disease; Leaky Gut Disorder; Ulcerative Colitis; IBS. Auto-immune disorders (just to name a few) may inevitably follow. And as our gut bacteria is responsible for digesting our food and providing nutrients to every cell and organ in our body, bad gut health will eventually cause major health challenges in the long run. We have become so reliant on prescription / over the counter medicine to help control these health challenges, but we forget that gut health starts with what we consume on a daily basis.
[singing] “Your hipbone’s connected to the back bone… the backbone’s connected to the neck bone.. (I’ve got the Skeleton song in my head, thinking about this next bit of important information!) 😊
Everything is connected! Your gut contains 500 million neurons, connected to your brain through nerves in your nervous system! Heard about the Vagus Nerve? It is the largest nerve, connecting your gut and your brain. It’s your body’s super highway, as it sends signals both ways! This could be why, if we are stressed – some people may experience constipation or others even diarrhoea. Love at ‘first sight’ – makes you feel ‘butterflies’ in your tummy! 😊 Seeing someone get injured – recall how that makes your stomach cringe? See? It’s all connected!
Studies have shown that a link between conditions like anxiety; depression; autism spectrum disorder; behavioural disorders etc. may be due an imbalance in gut bacteria. This is why diets like the GAPS diet (Gut and Phycology Syndrome, by Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride) has become so important in assisting families who have had challenges raising children with learning disabilities, speech difficulties, chronic illness; autism and behavioural disorders.
Are we doomed? The short answer is: NO.
The long answer is: ABSOLUTELY NOT!
About 80% of our Immune System resides in our gut. A healthy gut, makes it our modern-day weapon against disease and inflammation. While it goes without saying – inflammation fighting foods work even better when you limit or exclude all inflammation-causing foods!
How do we fight inflammation? By adding foods to our diet that fight inflammation!
Which are those again? Fermented foods and drinks like Kimchi; Kombucha and Kefir. Collagen rich Bone Broth. Soups and Juices made with specific Inflammation fighting, immune boosting fruits and vegetables! The varieties and flavours will blow your mind and trip your tastebuds!
